Access to Sunday SAT testing for ALL

The Issue

Right now, Sunday tests are only available to students whose “religion doesn't allow testing on Saturdays”. To request for Sunday testing, student must submit a letter that “explains the religious reason for the request, Is printed on stationery from your house of worship, Is signed by an official religious leader” according to the College Board. This policy prevents anyone else from taking the SAT on a Sunday even if it suits their needs.

Students should have equal opportunity of Sunday testing despite their access to religious leader’s approval. The College Board should expand Sunday testing option for every students, here’s the reason why:

  1.  Sunday testing is a choice every student should have as it affects their future.  It is physically demanding for students to wake up early in the morning after a busy week of school. Taking the SAT on Sunday will allow students to perform better since they will be less tired after a day of rest.
  2.  A student’s access to Sunday testing should not be granted by their religious leader’s approval. It is neither the right nor responsibility for a religious leader to determine an individual’s testing date. It should be up to the individual to decide what date is best for them.
  3. Sunday testing centers already exist. The College Board only has to grant every student equal access to Sunday testing.
  4. Test taking flexibility should continue even after Covid. ACT has expanded Sunday testing to everyone during Covid in September and October of 2020. If ACT can provide testing flexibility during Covid, why can’t the College Board do the same after Covid to make SAT more accessible and equitable?
