Access to Clean Laundry as an Essential and Basic Need in Canada

Access to Clean Laundry as an Essential and Basic Need in Canada
The Issue
Imagine not having any clean clothes, would you be able to go to work, school or just out in public? Unfortunately, so many members of our community have no choice but to live with no access or the means to clean their clothes, and are held back from fitting in, to live with dignity, but instead they face the same humiliating barrier every day of having to wear dirty clothes.
Picture standing in front of a job interview, wanting nothing more than to make a good impression, but knowing that your clothes betray you. Or watching your child go to school in dirty clothes, knowing the shame and isolation they’ll feel. These moments, though small to some, break spirits and rob people of their sense of worth.
This isn’t just about laundry. It’s about fitting into society and feeling of belonging. It’s about feeling human. It’s about dignity.
The World Health Organization has shown how poor sanitation puts lives at risk (WHO, 2019), yet we continue to overlook the most basic need of all: clean clothing.
Canada prides itself on being a country that cares for all its citizens, but how can we call ourselves compassionate when we leave people behind, denying people the most basic need of clean clothing. Having clean clothes is NOT an extravagant request, it’s NOT a privilege, but a basic human and an essential need—one we must fight for.
We are calling on the Canadian government to step up and declare access to clean laundry a fundamental right and an essential need.
Let us remind ourselves that dignity starts with the simplest of things. Together, we can lift the weight of shame and open the door to opportunity for every Canadian. No one should ever be left behind because they do not have clean clothes. Remember, the fabric of our nation is woven from the threads of dignity and respect for all citizens. Let us ensure that these threads are not only strong but also clean.
Please sign this petition to affirm your commitment to equality, dignity, and respect for all Canadians.
