The Issue

As of February 10th, 2025 it had been made known to the Acadia University, and Nova Scotia community as a whole that there was a decision made to permanently close the pool in the Acadia Athletics Complex due to the, "financial challenges of maintaining the facility" and, "extensive repairs and investments [needed] to meet operational standards." (Both quoted from the email that students received Monday morning.) The Acadia Aquatic Centre in the Acadia Athletics Complex has been open since 1968 and has grown to be an integral place for not only Acadia students, faculty and staff, but also the overall community in the town of Wolfville. Over the years it has become a place for athletic training, leisure, and well received community engagement among many other things.

The people that use the Acadia Aquatics Centre has become a community in and of itself through the dedication of the 50 person varsity swimmers that use the facilities for their training, practices, and even swim meets. It is home to the Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience (S.M.I.L.E) program, is a place for students to get a job that will work with their school hours as well as to volunteer, provides swimming lessons to those who wish to learn, and even teaches aquafit classes for the general public. For a majority of students using the facilities they have found a fun way to stay active, express their creativity and build a community and friend group around a sport that they enjoy.

The Acadia Aquatic Centre currently will remain open until June 15th 2025, unless there are more complications and issues that arise with the pool facilities. Should there be more complications and the pool falls apart sooner than that, then it will be closed much sooner. The Acadia Swim Team were not even given the chance to find a short-term solution like finding another pool that they could train at. With that rough deadline, this gives us about 3 1/2 months to change the president of Acadia's decision to close the pool for good. Please help us to do that by signing the petition!
