The issue

Change starts with education. We need the true history of Australia and its First Nations people being taught in Aussie schools. Not only to keep the culture alive but provide better understanding, recognition, relationships, and respect to Australia’s First Nations people.

We urge the Australian government to make Aboriginal History compulsory as a part of the school curriculum. The time is now to change our education system in order to teach all Australian kids about the culture of our world's oldest civilization. Not teaching our kids Australia's true history is no longer acceptable - our kids deserve to be taught the real history of this country.

I am a proud Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara man. I am privileged to travel and work with First Nations people in communities across Australia. We need more education around Aboriginal history and cultures, and what my people have been through. Educating our country on our culture gives First Nations people value and the respect we deserve and will help us to come together.

We urge the Australian government to make Aboriginal History compulsory as a part of the school curriculum. The time is now!!

Please pass this on to your friends and family. Thank you.

Responded
Dear petition signers Thank you for your advocacy and support for teaching the histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in schools – your voice is helping shape policy. We are writing to tell you about a commitment Labor recently made to teach First Nations languages to thousands of primary school students. We are lucky to live in a country that is home to the world’s oldest continuous cultures, with 60,000 years of wisdom, knowledge, language, and arts. Our country is made stronger and richer when we understand and celebrate this history and culture. But right now, less than one per cent of Australian students are learning a First Nations language at school. We are very excited that if an Albanese Labor Government is elected, thousands more young Australians will have the chance to learn a First Nations language as part of Labor’s plans to boost school attendance and lift academic results. Under Labor’s $14 million plan, 60 primary schools will be able to hire a full time First Nations educator. These educators will teach language to students and work with teachers on ways to share knowledge of local cultures across the curriculum, including through art and story-telling. This will help First Nations languages stay alive and thrive and better engage students and families in learning. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, learning First Nations languages has been shown to improve self-esteem and school attendance. For non-Indigenous students, learning First Nations languages can provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultures and histories of First Nations people. First Nations communities will be placed at the centre of this plan and will be essential to decision making at every step. Thank you again for your advocacy. We look forward to a Better Future with an Albanese Labor Government where more Australians can learn about First Nations languages and culture.
