Despite the use of chattel slavery and involuntary servitude being outlawed within the United States via 13th Amendment, the use of both of these practices  in prisons was not!

This issue begs the question: Is it possible to truly call our beloved nation the land of the free, yet we have the highest incarceration rate in the world and STILL legalize slavery? Where has our humanity gone? People are people, not machines. That is a distinction we must learn to make.
