Abolish VAT on bottled water in the UK
The Issue
As a certified water sommelier, I have dedicated my life to raising awareness about the importance and unique qualities of water. It's astonishing to find out that the UK government classifies bottled water akin to soft drinks, subjecting it to Value Added Tax (VAT). Meanwhile, tap water is considered essential to life, and is exempt from VAT. There seems to be a disconnect in recognizing that natural mineral water and spring water, which are as vital to human health as tap water, should similarly be VAT-free.
Natural mineral and spring water are not luxury items; they are essential for hydration and vital for numerous individuals who either prefer their unique taste profiles or have specific health needs requiring mineral-rich water. The VAT on bottled water not only contradicts the acknowledgment of its essential nature but also places an unnecessary financial burden on consumers, particularly those who consider natural mineral water indispensable for their well-being.
When we consider the environmental and public health perspectives, bottled water should be encouraged as a healthy choice. It offers a consistent quality option for hydration, which is critical in situations where tap water quality may be compromised. Forcing consumers to pay extra due to VAT discriminates against their preference for safe, quality hydration.
The UK government should reconsider its stance and acknowledge that water, in any form, is essential for life. By abolishing the VAT on bottled water, the government would demonstrate a commitment to public health and environmental sustainability, aligning with the no-VAT policy on tap water.
Join me in urging policymakers to rectify this oversight. Let’s demand that the UK government abolish VAT on bottled water, recognizing it as an essential commodity. Please sign this petition to support the movement towards a fair tax policy for water enthusiasts and health-conscious citizens alike.
