Abolish unnecessary booking system for Devizes recycling centre

The Issue

In several communities across the country, the local authorities have recently introduced a booking system for accessing recycling centres. While perhaps well-intentioned, this system introduces unnecessary complications and expenses that are disproportionately burdensome, particularly for residents not adept in using modern technology. This petition urges Wiltshire council to reconsider this decision and abolish the booking system, reverting to the walk-in model that better serves the needs of the community.

Firstly, the technological requirement to book a slot online or via mobile apps creates a barrier for many, particularly the elderly or those without access to digital devices and the internet. The digital divide is a real and pressing issue, and systems like these only exacerbate inequality by restricting access to essential services such as waste recycling. Such systems may disenfranchise vulnerable members of the community.

Moreover, the additional operational costs associated with maintaining and managing this booking system, including software development, IT support, and data management, are an unnecessary financial burden on local government resources. These funds could be redirected to enhancing recycling facilities, education on waste management, or other community services that directly benefit residents.

Additionally, there are legitimate concerns that this system will inadvertently increase instances of fly-tipping, as individuals who find it inconvenient or impossible to book slots might resort to illegal dumping of waste. Fly-tipping not only damages the environment but also places further financial strain on councils, who must then allocate resources to clean up these areas.

Wiltshire council should consider implementing alternative measures that do not involve complicated booking systems. Enhancements such as improved physical infrastructure, hiring additional staff to manage demand at peak times, or educational campaigns on recycling can achieve the same goals without the drawbacks of an inaccessible booking system.

We urge you to sign this petition to abolish the booking system for Devizes recycling centre access and advocate for solutions that better serve all members of our communities without digital barriers or undue financial costs. Let's work together to create inclusive and sustainable waste management solutions. Please sign and share this petition to make a change!
