Abolish The Work For The Dole Program

The Issue

The Work for the Dole program in Australia is a deeply unfair and exploitative system that targets society’s most vulnerable people. Many participants are on Centrelink due to personal circumstances that make it difficult or impossible to find employment. These circumstances can include mental or physical health issues, caregiving responsibilities, age discrimination, or systemic barriers. Rather than offering meaningful support, Work for the Dole punishes these individuals by forcing them into unpaid labour under the false promise of “work experience.”

Participants are required to work gruelling hours that don’t even meet the standards of paid employment. The work is often menial, repetitive, and lacking in real job training, offering little more than exhaustion and humiliation. This is not empowerment; it’s coercion.

Work for the Dole strips vulnerable people of their autonomy, freedom, and the opportunity to focus on improving their lives. It forces them into a cruel choice: endure an activity that worsens their mental and physical health or face the loss of essential income support. This is not a pathway to employment. It is a system designed to control and punish those who are already struggling. The program exploits and isolates its forced participants.

Excerpt from a Current Work for the Dole Participant

"I’m currently part of the Work for the Dole program, and what I’ve experienced is nothing short of unfair, dehumanising, and exhausting. My job provider has been dismissive and unsupportive whenever I’ve tried to explain my personal circumstances. I’ve left multiple appointments and shifts in tears. I’ve raised my health issues and my need for flexibility, but they’ve ignored me every time. The only reason I was forced into Work for the Dole in the first place was because my previous provider failed to put me into an activity, despite my numerous requests for assistance with courses. Even when I brought up the "missed activity requirement" notifications I was receiving, nothing was done.

Instead, I’ve been pushed into full-time work hours, doing more than I’ve ever worked in any paid retail job. The schedule leaves me with almost no time for the doctor’s appointments I need or for managing my mental and physical health. On top of that, I’m still expected to keep up with job searching and applications. It feels like I’m being set up to fail, and I think they know it. In my current activity, I’ve been offered minimal training, which I already had from previous work experience, and I’ve been left to my own devices despite requests for direction and clear tasks. I am essentially spending hours wandering around with nothing to do. I am gaining nothing positive from this. My mental and physical health is rapidly declining, and I am very quickly losing confidence and hope.

Work for the Dole isn’t providing me with real experience or opportunities. It’s just taking away my time, energy, and any chance I have to focus on finding a proper job or taking care of myself."

It’s time to stand up for fairness and dignity. End the unpaid, exploitative, morally corrupt Work for the Dole program now.
