Abolish the Use of the Term "Special Needs" in Global Discourse

The Issue

As someone who firmly believes in the Golden Rule, I am deeply troubled by the continued use of the term "special needs". This term, despite its seemingly benign nature, carries a stigma that impacts individuals with disabilities. The word "special" implies something better, greater or different from what is usual. Yet isn't equality what we all strive for?

The phrase "special needs" is used globally and pervades various sectors such as education, work, services, performing arts and sports - Special Education, Special Olympics etc. This terminology subtly reinforces inequality and creates a divide between those with disabilities and those without.

According to a study published in Disability & Society Journal (2015), labels like 'special needs' can perpetuate stereotypes about disability, leading to discrimination and exclusion. It's time we change our language globally to reflect our commitment towards inclusivity.

Let's work together to end this discriminatory language that further marginalizes people with disabilities. Let's replace it with terms that truly respect people's dignity and equality as human beings.
