Abolish the Use of 'Ceylon' in Official Contexts in Sri Lanka

The Issue

As a proud citizen of Sri Lanka, I am deeply concerned about the continued use of the term 'Ceylon' by official organizations within our country. Our nation has been independent since 1948, and it is high time that we fully embrace our identity as Sri Lankans. The term 'Ceylon', a relic from our colonial past, is an insult to those who fought for our independence and their efforts to establish a governance free from colonial influence.

Sri Lanka is not just any country; it's a nation with its unique culture, history and identity. To continue using 'Ceylon', a name given by colonizers, undermines this uniqueness and belittles the sacrifices made by countless patriots for our freedom.

This petition does not aim to erase history or suppress freedom of expression. The term can still be used in literature or other forms of writing that celebrate diversity and freedom of speech. However, its use in official contexts should be discontinued immediately.

The change we seek aligns with global trends towards decolonization and respect for national identities.

Let us honor those who fought for Sri Lanka's independence by respecting their struggle - let us call ourselves what we truly are - Sri Lankans! Sign this petition today to support the discontinuation of using 'Ceylon' in official contexts within Sri Lanka!
