Abolish the Sexist Dress Code in American Schools

Abolish the Sexist Dress Code in American Schools

The Issue

Our society needs to understand the importance of teaching respect between genders. Our school environments fall behind. Many schools in America still maintain a dress code that indirectly tells girls they are responsible for the objectifying gazes of boys.

This issue is deeply personal to me as I've seen how hard it is for girls to constantly live under such stringent rules and regulations dictating what they should wear, do, and even say. It is 2024, and yet we still hear statements like "Why don't you cover up? You're distracting the boys." This distressing reality is a clear indicator that our society needs immediate change. It is not a girl’s fault for expressing herself by wearing a crop top or a skirt. It is an issue when people sexualize parts of the body, such as skin, knees, stomach, chest, etc.

In a study from the National Women's Law Center (2018), dress codes disproportionately target and affect girls, especially girls of color, and this enforced dress code plays a significant role in body shaming and sexualization.

We need to end this harmful culture. We demand that schools change their dress code regulations, emphasizing education on respect and equality instead of telling girls to cover up. It's time we teach our young men to respect women instead of teaching our girls to tread softly around the male gaze.

Please, sign this petition and stand with us against this outdated, harmful school dress code. Show your support for equality, respect, and liberty of expression for every student.
