The Issue

Divination, the art of gaining insight into a question or situation, has long been a fundamental practice of our cultural and spiritual traditions - specifically in the Mincéirs, Pavees, An Lucht Siúil, Romani communities, and more widely within the Practicing Pagan community as a whole. As a longstanding tradition within these communities, tarot reading has not only been a means to provide spiritual guidance, but also a crucial source of income – a lifeline often used to support local communities through psychic fairs and other community fundraising events.

Nevertheless, our community has found itself unjustly entangled in legislation, a law that mandates tarot readers to obtain a license and become associated with a single address. These requirements hinder the inherent mobility of our culture, restrain religious practices and unjustly usurp our economic independence.

It’s a fact that such laws are not too widespread, as stated by the Federation of American Tarot Readers. Their existence is, however, a sign of misunderstanding and prejudice against a practice soaked in cultural and religious relevance, and they provide an unnecessary strain on those who earn their living through such culturally steeped practices.

Let's stand together to protect the foundation of cultural and religious freedom; let's stand together to reconsider the policies that directly affect us and reshape our futures. Repeal the restrictive licensing law for Tarot readers! Please sign this petition to support our fight to preserve our cultural and spiritual practices and maintain our economic freedom without being bound by legal constraints.
