Abolish the prom and leavers contract for Ormiston Horizon Academy

The Issue

The leavers events and prom at the end of Year 11 are a significant milestone in a child's life. It is an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their peers and teachers who have supported them throughout their school journey. However, due to a contract the school put in place, my son was barred from attending these events because of reflect hours.  The contract sets out rules around lost learning hours and if the students breach these hours, they are barred from attending all events at the end of the school year. Ormiston horizon include reflect hours in this criteria. Reflect is where child go to get away from the classroom. Many children will choose to go to Reflect as it's if often a more productive environment for studying.

In 2023, this contract led to police intervention at one such event when another girl was prevented from participating. This incident highlights the severity of the issue and calls into question whether such contracts are in our children's best interests.

The contract needs to be abolished. It should not stand as a barrier between our children and their well-deserved celebrations marking the end of high school life. Every child deserves closure on this chapter of their lives without unnecessary hindrances.

Join us in calling for an end to this unfair practice that denies our children essential experiences that contribute significantly towards shaping them into well-rounded individuals ready for what lies ahead after high school.  It's too late for my child, but this will keep happening every year if we do not do something about these rules that the school have put in place. It could be your child next year, or their friends.

Please sign this petition today; let's ensure all students can enjoy these important milestones without fear or restriction.
