The Issue
I am writing to address an urgent issue affecting the students at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham. The recently implemented one way system within the school premises is causing numerous daily inconveniences for both students and faculty alike. As a member of this community, I have witnessed firsthand how this system is impeding the academic progress and well-being of the students.
The one way system, intended to streamline hallway traffic, has instead led to students consistently arriving 5-20 minutes late to their lessons. This chronic delay negatively impacts not only the tardy students' education but also disrupts the entire class. Teachers find themselves having to repeat instructions and lesson materials, wasting valuable class time that could be better utilized for learning and engagement.
Moreover, the system has exacerbated safety concerns. The congestion and bottlenecking it creates in certain corridors during peak times do not adhere to safe movement practices. Students rushing to make it to their classes on time often clash in crowded intersections, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.
In addition, the hallways have turned into stressful environments, with students frequently violating proper hallway etiquette out of frustration and time constraints. This decline in civility and order cannot continue if we wish to foster a supportive and respectful school climate.
We propose a more flexible and practical traffic management strategy that accommodates the natural flow of student movement. Alternating directions during different times of day or allowing free movement in certain areas during non-peak periods could be more effective solutions. Consulting with both students and faculty to redesign the traffic flow and make necessary adjustments would ensure the school's environment is conducive to learning and safety.
We call upon the administration of Queen Elizabeth High School to re-evaluate the one way system. A review and adjustment would benefit the entire school community by reducing tardiness, minimizing risks, and restoring order in the hallways. Please help us make this vital change by signing the petition. Together, we can improve our school's atmosphere and support every student's right to a timely and safe education.
