Abolish the 'One Succession Tenancy Rule' for Long-term Residents

The Issue

We are a family who have lived in our home for more than 30 years, a home filled with memories and imbued with our history. Yet, we live under the constant threat of eviction due to the enforcement of the 'One Succession Tenancy Rule' by our housing association. This rule imposes that only one succession can occur regardless of individual circumstances, leaving us and many like us in a state of uncertainty and fear.

This ruling, intended to combat housing fraud, has cornered many innocent, long-term residents into an unwarranted position of insecurity. It does not take into account the emotional and social aspects of living in a family home for decades or even a lifetime. The absence of guaranteed tenancy rights for those who have lived in their homes as a family for years undermines the concept of family house and, consequently, social stability.

UK housing policy needs to evolve to better protect long-term residents and consider cases like ours, where the rule will only serve to disrupt lives without any good cause. Revising this policy not only addresses a grave social issue but also allows for a more considerate, humane approach to housing.

We implore the relevant authorities and policymakers to reconsider this rule, taking into account the needs of long-standing residents while ensuring checks for fraud are in place. Join us in advocating for a more understanding and inclusive housing policy. Please sign this petition and help us ensure our and potentially your, home is secure.
