The Issue

Greetings everyone,

I am a fellow student at St. John’s Wood Primary School (SJWPS), formerly known as Barrow Hill, and I stand with my peers in opposing the newly implemented uniform policy from our head teacher. For decades, SJWPS has thrived without a uniform, fostering an environment where students could express their individuality and families were spared the financial burden of school uniforms.

This recent change is not just an attack on our personal expression but also detrimental to the environment and our health. The uniforms consist of a 50/50 blend of polyester and cotton for the sweaters and t-shirts, while the pants, skirts, and shorts are predominantly polyester. As students, we would be exposed to polyester and the chemicals used to dye and make uniforms stain and wrinkle-resistant for over 195 days per year, which is harmful to our health. Polyester is a type of plastic, and when we wear it, we inhale microplastics that may lead to long-term health issues.

Moreover, the environmental impact cannot be overlooked. Polyester is a non-biodegradable material derived from fossil fuels, adding to the global plastic pollution crisis. Clothing production, especially with synthetics like polyester, is responsible for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, which is more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined (source: BBC Future, 2020). By embracing a uniform policy reliant on these materials, our school contributes to a cycle of environmental harm.

We understand the importance of having a school identity, but the students of Barrow Hill proved we can have a strong ETHOS without having a uniform. There are no studies that show that school uniforms improve students' behaviour or grades.

We respectfully urge the head teacher and school board to reconsider this policy for the betterment of both the students' well-being and our planet. Please join us in this cause and help us restore the value of choice and sustainability at SJWPS by signing this petition today. There is still time to change his mind so I hope you sign this petition.

Thank you for your support.
