Abolish the Murder and Enslavement of Non-Human Animals in Indiana

Abolish the Murder and Enslavement of Non-Human Animals in Indiana
Why this petition matters

Abolish the Murder and Enslavement of Non-Human Animals in Indiana
What changes do we seek?
Repeal Article I, section 39, of the Indiana Constitution, establishing the right to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife.
Abolish the property status of animals.
Outlaw the production and sale of animal products, like meat, milk, eggs, and leather.
Outlaw the use of animals for scientific experimentation and entertainment.
How will we do it?
Art. 16, § 1 of the Indiana Constitution details the process for amending the state constitution. A member of the House or Senate may propose a constitutional amendment. A majority in both the House and Senate must vote in favor of the amendment twice. The members of the Assembly in which the amendment is proposed as well as the members of the next Assembly must pass the amendment by a majority. Finally, a majority of voters must approve the amendment in a statewide vote.
Why should you support this cause?
Non-human animals like pigs, cows, chickens, and rats are intelligent beings, with complex mental lives, who experience pain and pleasure, much like humans. Keeping them in captivity and killing them to benefit humans is unjust. Consequently, these practices must be abolished. There are more than 20,000 animal agriculture operations in the state of Indiana. These operations are responsible for the captivity and murder of millions of animals every year. Around 2,000 of these are Confined Feeding Operations. Many other animals are used for scientific experiments by universities and businesses.
