The Issue

For almost a decade, I have dedicated myself to the demanding yet fulfilling role of a full-time family carer, giving all my strength, time, and love to a family member in need. This selfless commitment is unfortunately met with financial hardship as I am denied any financial support due to the stringent means test imposed on the Carers Allowance. This is a plea for recognition and justice for carers like myself who are tirelessly working without any financial aid.

Carers provide an invaluable service, offering relentless support to loved ones who require constant care, often at the expense of their own careers, social lives, and financial security. It is not just a job; it is a calling that requires 24/7 dedication. The current means testing policy, however, fails to acknowledge the sacrifices carers make, leaving us in a financial limbo.

In 2020, there were over 500,000 unpaid carers in Ireland, contributing services valued at nearly €20 billion annually. Yet, many of us are left without support due to arbitrary income thresholds. This is not only a grave injustice but also a shocking oversight of the government’s moral responsibility to support those who support others.

The abolition of the means test for Carers Allowance would provide much-needed financial stability to carers, allowing us to continue our critical roles without the burden of financial stress. This would not only benefit carers but also the wider society by ensuring that those in need of care receive the best possible support from their loved ones, rather than facing institutional care.

Join me in urging the Irish government to recognize the value of carers and their contributions by abolishing the means test for Carers Allowance. Your signature can lead to meaningful change and offer hope and support to countless carers across Ireland who devote their lives to caring for others. Sign this petition and help us champion the rights of carers for a fairer, more supportive society.
