Abolish the Mandatory Television License Fee

Abolish the Mandatory Television License Fee

The Issue

I am writing as an individual deeply affected by the financial burden imposed by the mandatory television license fee. This fee, supposedly utilized to fund public broadcasts, is not only discriminatory to low-income families, but is also disproportionately allocated and allows exploitation of public funds.

In the UK, failure to pay the £157.50 annual television license fee can result in a fine up to £1,000, burdening those least able to afford it (National Audit Office, 2015). Yet, high-ranking executives and top-tier stars of the BBC have been reported to receive excessive salaries, some of which are over £1 million per year (BBC's Annual Report, 2018). Allegedly, some of these funds have even gone into the pockets of figures involved in scandals of sexual abuse, suggesting a profound misuse of public funds.

The current system of the television license fee is patently unfair, from its imposition on the financially vulnerable, to its allocation to overpaid figures, and the potential misuse linked to atrocities such as paedophilia.

This calls for a revised system that facilitates important public broadcasting whilst promoting transparency and equity. Therefore, I implore you to join me in signing this petition to abolish the mandatory television license fee and bring about a fair system that truly serves the public.
