Abolish the Mandated School Phone Ban in Minnesota

Abolish the Mandated School Phone Ban in Minnesota
The Issue
I am a student in the state of Minnesota, and the imposed school phone ban significantly affects my learning and personal relationships. It is evident that the current ban restricts open communication and reduces the potential for spontaneous learning opportunities.
The thought that cell phones are only a distraction is outdated and frankly, incorrect. Students have had phones for a long time, why start such a restrictive ban now? You can argue it's needed more than ever because of it but, have you asked what people use it for? Many use it to alleviate stress on things such as transportation, friends from other schools, checking on family, and so much more. It would make more sense to teach safer ways to engage online than to cut it off completely.
Moreover, it's crucial to understand that the wider, unrestricted use of smartphones has become an integral part of society. Preparing students to use technology responsibly should be a task embraced by schools, instead of implementing outright bans.
If managed properly, cell phone use in class can be a powerful educational tool. A study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln showed that 9 out of 10 students report that their smartphones support their ability to learn (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2019). The ban has also impaired quick communication with family members during emergencies or scheduling conflicts.
Let's acknowledge the potential benefits and attain a balance between restriction and freedom. Encourage schools in Minnesota to rethink the absolute ban on cell phones and cultivate a smarter, more embracing approach towards their presence in classrooms instead. Please sign this petition and help bring forth a potential educational tool back into Minnesota's classrooms.
