As a dedicated student in secondary school, I find my days filled with a burdening volume of work from Sparx Maths and Sparx Science exercises, leaving me with very little time for extracurricular activities. Moreover, taking time away from my responsibilities such as caring for my autistic brother. It is not just my personal story; reports suggest that excessive homework can lead to harmful levels of stress among students, potentially affecting their mental and physical health (APA, 2018).

Secondary school already demands six hours out of my day. The recent introduction of Sparx Maths and Sparx Science extends this by an additional hour. The imposed responsibility by these programs is intruding the quality of life outside school, pushing aside hobbies and other forms of personal development like playing games, which - according to a study by The American Journal of Play (2013) - are crucial for cognitive development and stress relief.

We understand the aim of Sparx to reinforce learning. However, the overwhelming load it presents must be addressed and regulated to strike a balance between education and personal growth. Therefore, we call on educators and administrators to reassess the use of Sparx Maths and Sparx Science in providing homework whilst considering the overall workload of students.
