Abolish the Code Enforcement Division to Aid Lower Income Areas

The Issue

My community and I, like many others across the country in rural, suburban, and impoverished areas, are suffering due to the invasive and inappropriate actions of the Code Enforcement Division. Many of us are not part of Homeowner Associations (HOAs) and yet are enduring the bullying, harassment, and trespassing of this division on our personal property. The struggle is especially hard for those of us who are less fortunate and simply cannot afford to lose anything more. A broken rail or a missing piece of siding on a home should not be prioritized over people's health and welfare.

Our taxpayer money, which is currently feeding into this system, could be put to much better use. It could be efficiently diverted towards improving infrastructure, building better schools, and providing better healthcare, sectors that are in dire need of support. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, over 13% of the U.S. population was living in poverty in 2019. This underlines the urgent need for government funds to be directed towards poverty reduction initiatives.

Furthermore, people's rights to their private property should be respected. The relentless interference of the Code Enforcement Division in matters that don't fall under its jurisdiction is not necessary. It's time to put a stop to these malpractices. So, we call upon you to abolish the Code Enforcement Division as well as the City attorney and better direct our taxpayer dollars to where it can make a real difference. Please sign this petition and help us restructure our system for the betterment of all.
