The Issue

Imagine walking through the crowded halls of your school, surrounded by peers, and yet feeling isolated. We are teens who feel our voices have been taken from us, that one of the few pillars of safety and expression - our phones - has unjustly been taken away. The Baltimore City schools electronic phone ban has left us voiceless, disconnected, and in some cases, even more vulnerable.

While understanding the intentions behind the ban, which aims to keep students focused and disciplined, it fails to account for the countless students who utilize their phones for legitimate and educational purposes. From using them as a tool for learning through educational apps, to accessing necessary support in times of distress, phones have become integral to a teen's daily life.

A compelling study carried out by Common Sense Media highlights that 95% of American teenagers have access to a smartphone. These devices play crucial roles beyond entertainment; they act as a lifeline in emergencies, a connection to family, and a companion during breaks, maintaining mental well-being. Many teens, especially those dealing with anxiety or other mental health issues, find their phones a source of comfort and stability amidst the chaos of school life.

Moreover, the assumption that banning phones will instantly lead to better discipline is flawed. The root of such issues lies deeper and should be addressed with comprehensive solutions aimed at fostering a positive school environment. Enforcing the ban only penalizes all for the indiscretions of a few. We believe that the focus should rather be on educating students on responsible phone usage and setting boundaries that encourage responsible digital behavior.

We urge the Baltimore City School Board to reconsider this sweeping policy and instead collaborate with us, the students, to develop a balanced approach that upholds the freedom and safety of all involved. Together, let's create a policy that respects our voices and acknowledges our right to feel safe and connected at school.

Join us in advocating for a better approach that values our voices and rights. Sign and support our cause to abolish the phone ban in Baltimore City schools. Together, we can reclaim our right to feel safe and connected.
