Abolish the 3x Rent Requirement for Housing in Maryland
The Issue
I am a mother of three, a stay-at-home parent, while my husband works tirelessly for 40-50 hours per week, sometimes even more, just to ensure we meet our basic familial needs. In spite of our collective efforts, whenever we apply for apartments or any type of housing, our application inevitably falls short of the 3x rent rules that most places in Maryland enforce. We are teetering on the brink of homelessness - not due to an inability to pay the rent, but the surreal expectation that we should be able to afford three times the rent each month, a requirement most families cannot meet.
It has become nearly impossible for many families, like mine, in Maryland to afford housing due to this prevailing 3x rent rule. According to Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development, almost 35% of households devote more than 30% of their income just towards housing, falling into the category of 'cost-burdened'.
The time to take action is now. With already difficult economic conditions, the 3x rent rule is not only outmoded but is also perpetuating a housing crisis in Maryland; driving families toward potential homelessness. The housing market should be accessible and fair, not a punishing reminder of ever-growing economic disparity.
We call upon Maryland's lawmakers to abolish this 3x rent rule, making the process of renting a house simpler, less stressful, and within reach for more families. Help us to create a more equitable society where people are not excluded or disadvantaged due to their income.
Please, sign this petition and contribute to a future where housing in Maryland is within everyone's reach.
