I am a concerned citizen of the Philippines, deeply touched by the struggles many students face due to poverty. One such struggle is affording school uniforms, a requirement that seems unnecessary and burdensome for families already struggling to make ends meet. The poverty rate in our country is alarmingly high; as per World Bank data, 16.6% of our population lived below the national poverty line in 2018. This means that for many students, purchasing a school uniform represents an expense they simply cannot afford.

School uniforms are traditionally seen as promoting equality among students and reducing distractions caused by clothing choices. However, we must ask ourselves if this benefit outweighs the financial burden it places on our most vulnerable populations?

We believe there are other ways to promote unity and reduce distractions without imposing additional financial stress on struggling families. We propose that schools across the Philippines remove their uniform requirements and instead adopt dress codes that allow for more affordable clothing options.
