Abolish Points Deductions Completely in English Football
The Issue
As passionate football fans, we have witnessed the devastating impact of point deductions on clubs across all tiers of English football. This system, which penalizes clubs for financial breaches with on-pitch consequences, is more than just unfair; it's destructive to the very fabric of our beloved sport.
Football is not just a game; it's a community. It's an institution that has transcended its working-class roots to become a global phenomenon. Yet, the current system threatens this community by punishing fans and clubs for the mistakes or ineptitude of club owners.
Take the Super 6 debacle as an example. These clubs committed what many consider being one of the worst crimes in English football history yet were fined only £2.5 million each - an amount they themselves settled and have yet to pay fully. Meanwhile, smaller clubs facing similar charges would face expulsion under current rules.
This disparity is not only unjust but also detrimental to the financial stability of many clubs who are plunged into uncertainty due to these penalties. The punishment does not fit the crime - financial breaches should equate to financial penalties.
We propose that points deductions be abolished from our football system and replaced with appropriate monetary fines proportional to each club's revenue and size, ensuring fairness across all tiers while still holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
The finances collected from these fines could then be reinvested into improving our game at every level - benefiting everyone involved in this beautiful sport we love so dearly.
