Abolish Personal Property Taxes in Missouri

Abolish Personal Property Taxes in Missouri
The Issue
This issue is important to me because as a resident I believe the local and state government has taken enough away from its people. It's time we, the people, stand up and say no to local taxation. We're taxed on the money we make, taxed when we purchase something, and taxed just because we own something. Enough is enough.
Personal property taxes in Missouri are an unfair burden on residents. These taxes are imposed on items like cars, boats, and even farm equipment that people have already paid sales tax on. For many families, this recurring annual expense strains their financial resources, exacerbating economic hardship.
According to the Missouri State Tax Commission, local governments collected over $1.5 billion from personal property taxes in the most recent fiscal year. This source of revenue isn't just substantial, but it hits the poorest and middle-income Missourians the hardest. As reported by the Tax Foundation, Missouri ranks 13th in the nation for highest personal property tax rates. This level of taxation is neither sustainable nor justifiable.
Relying on personal property taxes is an outdated approach. Our neighboring states, such as Tennessee, have successfully navigated public financing without this tax, proving alternative solutions exist. Missouri should follow suit and find innovative strategies to fund local governments without penalizing its citizens for owning necessities or tools of their trade.
I urge Missouri lawmakers to reconsider and abolish personal property taxes. It’s time to alleviate the burden on Missouri residents and embrace a taxation system that is fairer and respects ownership rights. By signing this petition, you add your voice to a growing demand for change. Support our fight for financial fairness and freedom from unnecessary taxation.
