Abolish Personal Property and Real Estate Tax in Missouri

The Issue

Missouri residents are subject to both personal property tax and real estate tax, creating an unnecessary financial burden for many families and individuals. These taxes not only strain household budgets but also hinder economic progress in our communities. In a state where economic vitality should be encouraged, it's time we reevaluate and abolish these outdated tax systems.

Personal property taxes in Missouri are levied on various items such as vehicles, boats, and farm equipment, among others. These taxes can amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year, which many families find difficult to afford. Eliminating this tax would offer much-needed financial relief to residents, allowing them to redirect their funds into essential areas such as education, healthcare, and local businesses.

Similarly, real estate tax is another significant financial burden for homeowners across the state. While property taxes are intended to support local services such as schools and public safety, it is crucial to explore more equitable and sustainable methods of funding these essential services without placing disproportionate pressure on property owners.

States like Florida and Texas have successfully managed public services with alternative revenue systems that do not rely on these heavy-handed taxes, proving that there are viable solutions available. Missouri could follow their lead, implementing a model that supports economic growth while relieving residents of this onerous tax burden.

By abolishing personal property and real estate taxes, Missouri can position itself as a more attractive place to live, work, and do business, ultimately stimulating economic development and population growth. Join us in advocating for a fairer system that benefits everyone in our state. Please sign this petition to urge Missouri legislators to reexamine and eliminate personal property and real estate taxes in favor of more progressive tax solutions.

There is now a special committee appointed by the Speaker doing work in this area and has been working a good portion of the summer. They have been meeting and taking testimony. My understanding is this topic will be brought forward in the next legislative session as a top priority. I am awaiting their findings. Thank you, Phil Amato District #113
