Abolish Parking Pass Enforcement for New Smyrna Beach Locals
Abolish Parking Pass Enforcement for New Smyrna Beach Locals
The Issue
My name is a name you've seen in the New Smyrna Beach community for over 30 years. I've been a resident, neighbor, and faithful taxpayer in our beautiful coastal town. So, you can imagine my dismay when I, just like many others, was ticketed for parking in a lot that has been free for the majority of my adult life. Despite diligently maintaining my vehicle registration and consistently contributing through our local taxes, I am penalized for utilizing what was once a freely accessible shared space.
Our local government recently initiated parking pass enforcement. This move is arguably to bolster our economy and further maintain our community, but at what cost? It creates an unnecessary burden for locals like you and I, especially for those who have been long-term contributors to the well-being of our city. Most importantly, it feels like a betrayal to the long-standing residents who have been maintaining and promoting our locality.
According to the American Automobile Association, the average car owner pays $1,202 per year in auto insurance and an additional average of $225 annually on vehicle maintenance alone. These costs are excluding taxes that directly contribute to local projects, community support initiatives, and now, our parking lots.
This is a heartfelt plea to the local government to reconsider the parking pass enforcement and return to the practice of allowing free parking for the taxpaying residents of New Smyrna Beach. It's not just about reversing a costly policy. It's about supporting individuals like you and me who have invested so much in our community.
Please add your name to this petition and support the fight to remove the enforced parking pass for local residents.
