Abolish Oregon's Water Access Permit Requirement

Abolish Oregon's Water Access Permit Requirement
The Issue
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, some of my fondest memories revolve around summer days spent with my family on Oregon's abundant waterways. Whether it was floating on an inner tube, paddleboarding, or kayaking, these experiences shaped my childhood and brought immense joy to countless families like mine. Unfortunately, the recent introduction of a law requiring a Water Access Permit for the usage of any boat—including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and even two inner tubes tied together—threatens to curtail the simple pleasures that Oregon's waterways offer to us all.
This new legislation is not just a trivial inconvenience; it significantly impacts the ability of families to enjoy recreational activities that have been part of our heritage for generations. The financial burden of obtaining permits for every floatation device used poses an unnecessary hurdle for those simply seeking some wholesome fun. These activities do not harm our waterways or ecosystems, and penalizing their usage contradicts the spirit of accessible public enjoyment that Oregon's natural landscapes symbolize.
Our waterways are public goods meant to be enjoyed by everyone without undue financial constraints. The law disproportionately affects low-income families who might not have the resources to pay for multiple permits, thereby excluding them from water-based recreation that should be universally accessible.
Moreover, while maintaining the safeguard of our waterways is fundamental, the current law is overly broad and applies to small watercraft that pose minimal risk to the aquatic environment. Redirecting focus towards educational programs and awareness about environmental preservation would be a more effective solution for preserving our lakes and rivers.
Let's stand together to ask for a repeal of this unnecessarily restrictive law and advocate for a more reasonable approach that does not compromise Oregon’s outdoor recreational legacy. Sign this petition to protect our right to freely enjoy the natural waterways of Oregon, ensuring that future generations can create cherished memories just as we did.
