The Issue

16 years ago, Tyler Dwight’s world was shattered. His beloved daughter, Sahara Dwight, an innocent little girl robbed of her future, fell victim to an unspeakable crime — aggravated murder and heinous sexual assault. The most unimaginable, premeditated violent, and ultimately evil act of rape and murder of this beautiful young child. The man, Dustan Wallace, responsible for these unforgivable acts is now being considered for release to live amongst our communities, amongst our children. This is not justice. This is a betrayal to every parent who seeks to protect their child. This demonic individual, self proclaimed that “blood” is his favorite color. A Demon who was promised by Judge Garrison to never be released. Yet, here we are, due to careless and absolutely reckless legislation.

The potential release is made possible by Oregon's SB 1008, a bill signed into effect by former governor, Kate Brown. This legislation fundamentally changes sentencing guidelines and allows for the release of convicted individuals who have committed violent, unimaginable offenses as juveniles. The discomforting truth is that this man was still evaluated as a risk to reoffend. Our children, our families, deserve safety and peace of mind, a reassurance that dangerous individuals with a propensity to harm will be kept securely away. He is to be released to not only the same state, or county, but the exact town that he committed this demonic crime, to Roseburg, Oregon.

The SB 1008 bill, while perhaps “well-intentioned” in offering “hope and reform”, utterly fails in instances where individuals have committed severe crimes that threaten and traumatize community safety permanently, with ultimately NO REGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR COMMUNITY!!!! Juvenile redemption is a noble goal; however, it should not overshadow justice for victims and security for the public, especially when there's a high probability of reoffending, and COMMITED THE MOST EVIL CRIME. The malleability of the brain during adolescence should not be an excuse for a future where a life sentence is voided merely due to age and perceived rehabilitation. After all, that excuse CANNOT be valid only when it fits a political party’s agenda. WE NEED PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AND OUR COMMUNITIES FROM THESE DEMONIC CRIMINALS WHO ARE ESPECIALLY STILL AT RISK OF REOFFENDING.

Imagine this was your child. Would you feel safe knowing someone with such a history of violence, still a threat, is free to roam? To be at the grocery store or shopping center, in the same vicinity as your child? The slightest potential for similar tragic events cannot be overlooked. We need a legislative change that balances hope with responsibility, redemption with justice, allowing convicted felons back into society only when it is unequivocally safe.

Let us take a stand, not only for Tyler Dwight and his daughter, Sahara Dwight, but for every family living in fear of such horrors. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the rights of victims, fostering a safer environment for our children, and challenging our legislators to amend the flaws in SB 1008 which currently jeopardizes community peace. Demand that our justice system reflects its obligations to protect its most vulnerable citizens.

We cannot remain silent. Sign this petition to urge Oregon lawmakers to abolish or amend the SB 1008 bill and ensure that justice truly prevails for the victims. Protect our children—protect our future. Let’s call this “Sahara’s Law”!
