Abolish Mandatory Phone Pouches in Irish Schools

Abolish Mandatory Phone Pouches in Irish Schools
The Issue
My name is an Anonymous Change.org user and I, like many others, rely on my phone for communication and learning. A recent decision by the Department of Education to require mandatory phone pouches within Irish schools feels like a personal assault on my educational rights. Smartphones are not inherently destructive to the educational environment; the issue lies in the misuse of these tools. Furthermore, instead of addressing the bigger issue of bullying, our Department of Education is pinning the problem on technology.
In a world that is increasingly digital, it's important that schools incorporate these elements as an integral part of learning, rather than deeming them as distractions. In fact, 73% of teachers use mobile phones for instruction in their classroom, according to a study by the Learning Assembly.
However, building infrastructures conducive to learning should be a priority too, with funds directed towards the renovation of dilapidated school buildings, instead of investing in cell phone pouches. The Environment Rating Scales Institute stipulates physical environment as a critical factor impacting a child’s learning process.
Our educational system should not mirror a prison regime. Instead of locking away our communication tools, the Department needs to focus on constructive solutions that foster learning and address the core issue of bullying.
Let us stand together to petition the Department of Education and overturn this decision on mandatory phone pouches in Irish schools that infringes on our civil liberties and misdirects potential funding from more critical areas. Sign this petition today.
