The Issue

My daughter, Jamie Monroe, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, has been unjustly sentenced to life without parole under the felony murder law. This law states that anyone involved in a felony where a death occurs can be charged with murder, regardless of their actual involvement in the crime. This is not justice.

In our case, my daughter was not directly involved in any criminal activity but was merely present when a tragic incident occurred. She is now paying an unimaginably high price for someone else's actions.

This isn't just about my family; it's about fairness and justice for all families who have been or could be affected by this law. According to The Sentencing Project, as of 2019 there were over 200,000 people serving life sentences in U.S prisons (The Sentencing Project). Many of these individuals are serving life without parole sentences under felony murder laws.

We need to reform our legal system to ensure that punishment fits the crime and that innocent bystanders aren't subjected to such harsh penalties due to their mere presence during a crime. It's time we abolish life without parole sentences under felony murder laws.
