Abolish Law SS21-701 Regarding Skateboarding

The Issue

As a former skateboarder who discovered freedom and physical fitness in this enjoyable and now Olympic-recognized sport, I find laws like SS21-701 reprehensible. These laws date back to a time when skateboarding was demonized, seen as an activity of rebellion, rather than appreciated as a form of self-expression, creativity and athleticism. Many adolescents, like myself back in the day, turned to skateboarding as an alternative to traditional team sports, searching for individual freedom and physical activity.

Now, years later, disappointing as it is, these laws still exist. They continue to unfairly penalize, and suppress a sport that has grown in acceptance and respect worldwide. I wonder about the necessity of maintaining regulations like SS21-701. Are we doing more harm to the youth in our communities by suppressing a healthy and expressive activity, especially in a time when the need for more physical activities is more important than ever?

The fundamental question that needs answering is - why does SS21-701 even exist? What prompted this law's inception? And furthermore, how many 'violations' will this law prevent if it remains? Or on the contrary, how much freedom and constructive activity will we allow to flourish if we decided on its removal?

Times have changed and laws must evolve with them. Skateboarding is no longer a symbol of teenage rebellion but a recognized sport, a lifestyle and for some an escape. Let's wipe out antiquated laws that serve no contemporary purpose.

I urge you to support the cause. Let’s reassess and abolish law SS21-701. Sign this petition and let the wheels of skateboards roll freely.
