Abolish Interprovincial Trade Barriers for Canadian Wine

The Issue

The Canadian wine industry, a benchmark of our nation's agriculture and culture, is being stifled by outdated and unfair interprovincial trade barriers. These barriers treat Canadian-made wines as if they were imported products, resulting in inflated prices and limited availability across provincial lines. This not only hampers the growth of our wineries but also deprives Canadian consumers of the chance to enjoy affordable, high-quality wines produced right here at home.

Consider this: a local $25 bottle of British Columbia Chardonnay can cost as much as $45 in Ontario due to these trade restrictions and markups. The consequences are profound. Our local wine producers struggle to compete with international brands that can freely enter provincial markets without the same restrictions. The effect, Canadian wine is priced out of its local markets, causing a ripple effect of economic challenges for those who make a living in this industry. All Canadian wine is local wine regardless of where it's made or sold in Canada.

The impact is far-reaching. According to Canada's National Wine Awards, our nation's wine industry contributes over $9 billion to the economic output annually, and employs more than 37,000 people. Yet, the full potential of this significant sector is hampered by these outdated restrictions. Wineries are forced to navigate a costly and complex maze of regulations that limit their ability to expand and share their products with fellow Canadians.

Interprovincial trade barriers in Canada can cost us a whopping $200 billion every year? But guess what? If we could get rid of them, our GDP could go up by a whopping 7.9% over the long run.

To foster a thriving, competitive market that benefits both producers and consumers, provinces must work together to redefine and eliminate these trade barriers. Streamlining interprovincial regulations and reducing markups are crucial steps toward enabling our wine industry to compete on both a domestic and international stage.

By signing this petition, you're voicing your support for a fairer, more accessible wine market in Canada. Stand with us in calling for reform, demanding the removal of these barriers so our magnificent Canadian wines can be enjoyed and easily accessed by all Canadians, enriching both our palates and our economy.
