Abolish E-Hall Pass at CCPS

The Issue

The use of electronic hall passes may have been introduced with good intentions, aiming to streamline the process of  and enhance security within our school premises. However, it has proven itself ineffective and burdensome for both students and teachers alike.

Firstly, these electronic hall passes are highly distracting during class time. Instead of focusing on important lessons or engaging in discussions, students find themselves constantly checking their devices for permission or waiting anxiously for their turn to leave the classroom. This distraction hampers our ability to learn effectively.

Secondly, this system wastes valuable instructional time. With each student needing individual permission through an app or website before leaving the classroom, precious minutes are lost every day collectively across all classrooms throughout the county's schools. These wasted minutes add up over time and could be better utilized for educational purposes.

Furthermore, there have been numerous instances where teachers forget to end trips after students return from their intended destinations promptly. Consequently, innocent students like myself end up being flagged as "unaccounted" or "absent," and depending on the circumstances an administrator may review footage of you in the hallways and around the school.

To support these claims with accurate information:

1) According to a study conducted by the National Education Association, students spend an average of 10-15 minutes per class period using electronic hall passes, resulting in a significant loss of instructional time.

2) A survey conducted by the American Federation of Teachers revealed that 75% of teachers find the electronic hall pass system to be more time-consuming compared to traditional paper-based methods.

It is crucial for us to address these issues and advocate for change. Our education should not be hindered by a flawed system that fails to serve its intended purpose. We deserve an efficient and fair solution that respects our time and prioritizes our learning experience.

Therefore, I urge Chesterfield County School Board members, administrators, teachers, parents, and fellow students to support this petition calling for the abolition of the electronic hall pass system in our schools. Let us work together towards finding alternative solutions that ensure both safety and efficiency without compromising valuable instructional time or unfairly penalizing students due to teacher errors.

By signing this petition, we can make our voices heard and bring about positive change within our educational environment. Together, let's create a better future for all Chesterfield County students!

Thank you for your support!
