The Issue

I’m starting this petition because Illinois’ current law requiring a full driver’s license to operate a 50cc moped is outdated, unfair, and out of step with modern transportation needs. For many people — students, young workers, low‑income residents, and anyone who doesn’t drive a car — a small 50cc moped is the most affordable and practical way to get around. Yet the state forces these riders to go through the entire automobile licensing process, even though mopeds are low‑speed, lightweight, and comparable to e‑bikes.

This issue is personal to me because 50cc mopeds offer independence, mobility, and opportunity. They’re inexpensive to maintain, easy to operate, and environmentally friendly. But the license requirement blocks people who simply need a safe, simple way to travel short distances. Illinois should not make everyday transportation harder than it needs to be.

I’m calling on the Illinois General Assembly to abolish the driver’s‑license requirement for 50cc mopeds and replace it with a modern, reasonable alternative — such as basic registration, insurance, and a short safety course. This keeps riders safe without forcing them into a system designed for cars.

If e‑bikes don’t require a license, 50cc mopeds shouldn’t either.

Please sign this petition to support fair, accessible transportation for everyone in Illinois. Together, we can push for a law that reflects today’s realities and gives people the freedom to move.
