End Daylight Savings Time in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Issue

I am a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, deeply concerned about the impact of daylight savings time on our mental health. The darkness that engulfs us after work is not merely an inconvenience; it's a threat to our well-being. It is detrimental to driving home from work, increasing the risk of accidents due to poor visibility.

Daylight savings time was initially introduced during World War I to save energy. However, modern studies show that this practice no longer provides significant energy savings. In fact, it may even increase residential electricity demand (source: National Bureau of Economic Research).

Moreover, several studies have linked the transition into daylight saving time with an increase in heart attacks and strokes (source: American Heart Association). The sudden change in sleep patterns can disrupt our circadian rhythm leading to negative effects on both physical and mental health.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, where we already struggle with long winter nights, this effect is exacerbated. We need light when we are most active - during waking hours after work - not while we're asleep.

It's high time we reconsider this outdated practice for the sake of our community's well-being. Join me in calling upon our local government officials to abolish daylight savings time in Newfoundland and Labrador. Please sign this petition if you believe that your health matters more than an antiquated tradition.
