The issue

I am one of the many residents of New South Wales who is dissatisfied with the effect of Daylight Saving Time (DST) on our regular schedules, and its detrimental impact on our everyday lives. As a result, I am starting this petition, aiming to garner enough support to abolish Daylight Saving Time in our region.

Daylight Saving Time was first introduced in 1916 to make better use of daylight during the summer months. However, it has received extensive criticism and its purpose and relevance in today's society is continually questioned. The Royal Society for Public Health in UK reported that majority of people sleep less than recommended 7-9 hours during the DST transition which could lead to serious potential health risks. Furthermore, a study by JP Morgan Chase institute in the US found that DST transition is followed by drop in economic activity by 2.2% (source: "The Effects of Daylight Saving Time by JP Morgan", 2016). An Australian study by Monash University Professor of Diabetes Paul Zimmet claimed that the switch to daylight saving time caused an increase in heart attacks, road accidents, workplace accidents, and cognitive dysfunction, and could amplify the health issues.

Its effect is profound and universal, affecting not just our productivity, but our health, sleeping patterns, and even our safety. DST often leads to a loss of synchronisation in our bodies' biological clocks causing what is termed as "social jet lag". This has negative impacts on our cognitive function, metabolic processes, and overall well-being.

I, along with numerous others affected by DST, call on our local leaders to consider the viability of such an irregular system in our modern society. By signing this petition, we can build the momentum necessary to eliminate Daylight Saving in New South Wales. So, make a change for the better, sign the petition.
