In the United States, countless Americans are struggling to recover from the ongoing economic debt crisis. Particularly, the traditional credit scoring system prevalent in the country is acting as a substantial barrier to financial recovery for many. There is a large section of people who, because of their credit scores, cannot secure the necessary loans or financial aids to get back on their feet. For instance, a 2020 analysis from Consumer Reports saw an average of 68% of respondents indicating that their credit scores negatively affected their ability to purchase a car, rent or buy a home, as well as take out personal loans. Therefore, we urgently call for the abolition of credit scores. Such a move will contribute toward economic inclusivity and create a more fair system that does not penalize people for financial misfortunes beyond their control. It is time for a change.
