In the UK, we shouldn’t be made to live in fear by paying this bill that we actually have no break down for and also may not even use the services that our council tax apparently gets distributed to. I have personally lacked food at times to pay this ridiculous extortionate bill and if I can’t afford it I have been threatened with bailiffs and enforcement as well as thousands of others that can barely afford to live. It’s time to stand up and take action rather than continue to complain. Residents are required to pay Council Tax, a local taxation system with domestic rates. Each property is assigned one of eight bands (A to H) based on property value, and the tax is set as a fixed amount for each band. This often leads to significant payment burdens for the less affluent and can contribute to worsening social inequality. According to a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research, Council Tax is considered regressive, as lower income households tend to pay a higher proportion of their disposable income than richer households (Institute for Public Policy Research, 2018). We advocate for the abolishment of Council Tax in favour of a more economically balanced substitute. The proposed alternative should be progressive, fair and based on the ability to pay rather than property value.
