Abolish Compulsory Schooling for a More Engaging Learning Environment

The Issue

I am currently a student, and like many others, I find the traditional school system to be less than stimulating. It's not that we dislike learning; it's that the current system often stifles creativity and individuality. We believe there are more engaging ways to foster education.

In 2019, a survey by Gallup showed that only 34% of students in grades 5 through 12 were engaged with school (Gallup Student Poll, 2019). This is an alarming statistic considering the importance of education in our society.

We propose a shift from compulsory schooling to alternative educational models such as Montessori or Waldorf methods, homeschooling or unschooling where children have more control over their learning process. These alternatives have been shown to produce well-rounded individuals who excel not just academically but also socially and emotionally (American Journal of Play, Fall 2011).

We are not advocating for an end to education; rather we want an evolution towards a system that truly values each child’s unique abilities and interests. Let us make learning fun again!
