Abolish C1 Driving Test Requirement for Ambulance Service Workers

The Issue

For those who passed their UK driving test post-1996, a significant time and financial barrier exists in the form of a compulsory C1 driving test to operate ambulance service vehicles. This requirement is not mandated for those who passed their tests before 1996, thus creating an unfair system. The necessity to pay for tests often falls on the NHS trusts, therefore implicating government funds and wasting taxpayer money. Ambulance service workers already must complete a rigorous 4 week blue light driving qualification to operate ambulances which covers safe operation and handling of vehicles. Thus the C1 test serves no apparent purpose other than to cost up to £1000 per person for the training and test costs which at a time of financial difficulty for the NHS seems utterly incomprehensible.

This extra hurdle restricts the accessibility and efficiency of emergency services, an integral part of our healthcare system. We ask that the C1 driving category entitlement is added by exemption for ambulance workers, removing the requirement for an extra test, saving resources, reducing financial implications and allowing for a swifter path into service. Join us in pushing for this significant amendment in driving protocol for the UK's emergency service workers. Please sign this petition.
