Ableist language perpetuates harm --- end the APA's use of ableist labels!
The Issue
Autistic person, or person with autism? Autism Spectrum Condition, or Autism Spectrum Disorder? Difference, disability, or disorder? Or just Autism? Words matter, and language choices have deep implications and impacts.
Currently, the language that is used to describe, identify, and diagnose what is currently named “Autism Spectrum Disorder” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM) is ableist and problematic. The stigma associated with terminology like abnormality, maladaptive behavior, and disorder, results in negative outcomes for Autistic individuals as well as negative implications for their families and caregivers, and the practitioners with whom they work. Through a reflective reassessment process, working alongside the Autistic advocate community, the true Autism experts, the creation of neurodiversity affirming and anti-ableist language in the DSM can be achieved and positively change the implications for the autism community.
We implore the American Psychological Association (APA) to partner with the diverse members of the Autistic community to garner the perspectives, lived experiences, and expertise in order to update the language used in the DSM. Don't let one more person experience this ableist language, demand change now! Join the petition and beseech the APA to update the language they use in the DSM.
