Sign Petition to Support Jesse Williams in His Fight Against Injustice for People of Color
The Issue
Jesse Williams is more than an actor & star of "Grey's Anatomy." For my generation, he is a hero, a king, an activist, a revolutionary in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Harriet Tubman, Harry Belafonte, & Muhammad Ali. We are living in tumultuous times when countless men, women, and children have been unjustly killed by people in authority. We have cried, we have screamed, we have marched, we have prayed for change. Like Donny Hathaway sang, "We are Young, Gifted, & Black." Jesse Williams is no racist. People are only calling him a racist because they are intimidated by a biracial black man speaking so boldy and acknowledging with such brutal honesty, passion, & conviction the discrimination and injustices of people of color in his speech at the BET Awards. How can we, as a society, not acknowledge that something is not right? Do we not hear the screams of Trayvon Martin's mother or Tamir Rice's mother? Whether it's Oprah, Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Spike Lee, or Ava Duvernay, why are black people labeled racist for speaking out against discrimination and injustice? Undercover racists are the real racists who are afraid of the power of these brilliant black kings & queens. Those who believe black and brown people are overreacting or paranoid about racism have to be heartless and soulless with no sort of empathy or compassion. If you read some of the negative comments out there online about Jesse, true racist people have been calling him a n*gger repeatedly. These racist people have been saying, "Who does this n*gger think he is?" Mr. Williams has stood in the trenches right there with the people in Ferguson and he is producing a documentary on Black Lives Matter. Like filmmaker & Howard University professor Haile Gerima, Jesse subscribes to the notion of Sankofa, how can we know where we're going, if we don't know from whence we've come. Like Alice Walker, the author of "The Color Purple," I honor Jesse Williams and support him wholeheartedly in the fight against injustice for people of color. Fearless Jesse Williams, be bold, be brilliant, be black. ABC, you are a champion of diversity with thought provoking programming featuring people of color like "Good Morning America," "Once," "Blackish," & Shonda Rhimes' "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," & "HTGAWM." Please keep Jesse Williams on "Grey's Anatomy." Thank you.
