Convince the news media FORMER president Donald J. Trump is NOT newsworthy!
The Issue
Help me convince the news media that starting 1/20/21, every word, tweet, rally, and television appearance by FORMER president Donald J. Trump is NOT newsworthy.
After Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20th, 2021, we, the undersigned, want to make all news organizations cognizant of the fact that as a former U.S. president, Donald Trump's words and deeds must no longer be deemed headline-making news. To effectuate this change in how the news media evaluates and presents the former president, we, the undersigned, agree to immediately stop viewing and/or listening to any news source that presents Trump's name in a sensationalized, headline-grabbing manner.
We recognize that news organizations need viewers to generate advertising revenue in order to thrive. By diminishing viewership of news media who continue to sensationally broadcast Trump's words and actions, we believe we can change the balance of news coverage to more fairly represent what should and should not be deemed newsworthy from this former U.S. president.
Historically, news coverage of former presidents, when presented at all, was minor news. However, over the past four years, Donald Trump has acted and behaved like no other president. Consequently, once out of office, we can anticipate a continuing barrage of sensationalist tweets, rallies, and media appearances, each filled with his usual dubious proclamations, racist dog whistles, unfounded and dangerous conspiracy theories, demeaning rhetoric, and outright lies. If the media continues to give Trump a platform, they are aiding and abetting him in his quest to spread disinformation and incite his supporters.
In anticipation of this outpouring of vitriol, much of it most likely directed at the new administration, and because Donald Trump has demonstrated an unending capacity to embellish, fabricate, and outright lie with abandon, we the undersigned are agreeing to turn off any news source that presents sensational stories about Trump as major headline grabbing items.
To the media, we are demanding a re-evaluation of what you consider newsworthy. While we believe former presidents should be shown respect because of the office they once held, respect must also be earned. After four years of spewed indignities from Trump, which has affected the U.S. both here and abroad, it is clear he has shown no respect for the office of presidency, for the constitution, for the media, for our allies, and most importantly, for the American people. When the news media gives Trump a platform, they are, in essence, giving him respect that is clearly undeserved and unwarranted.
In these unprecedented times, the news media must change tact in how they cover Trump. Our democracy depends on it.
