The Issue
For over 40 years Nurse Practitioners around the world have been providing comprehensive, person-centered, high quality, and cost-effective healthcare in the communities they live in. Nurse Practitioners in Alberta enjoy the one of the broadest scope of practice in North America. NPs are licensed and regulated to autonomously assess, diagnose, order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging, and make referrals to specialists as appropriate. As citizens/patients become more engaged and empowered in healthcare decision making, NPs need to be a viable option. The Government of Alberta is responsible for quickly removing barriers to practice for NPs; Our main barrier is access to sustainable funding models to serve our patients and our communities. Despite Nurse Practitioners being legislated as an essential healthcare provider in Alberta, Albertans are unable to benefit from our care like other jurisdictions that have modernized their healthcare system. NPs are unable by law to unionize or to strike, and thus, they have limited options to hold government accountable. This is at a time when Albertans expect quality timely access to healthcare close to home to improve their health and the health of their community. Albertans have repeatedly called on the provincial government to develop NP funding models that truly promote team-based care. We are advocating for the creation of NP-MD collaborative care teams and/or NP-led care teams. The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and the Alberta Chambers of Commerce have both called on the Government of Alberta to develop an independent funding model to support the broad integration of NPs across the healthcare system.
The development of Nurse Practitioner funding models would dramatically increase access to healthcare for both urban and rural Albertans, create much needed innovative team-based care, and diversify our provinces health workforce (for a balanced approach to healthcare delivery and governance).
