The Issue

Ontario has made a commitment in The Journey Together in addressing names that are offensive to Indigenous people. Included are the names of mascots, school team names and logos to make schools more inclusive.  Other efforts in North America address names of places that are pejorative towards Indigenous people. Canada's mandate towards Truth and Reconciliation needs assistance in moving forward in the calls to action towards social justice. This petition proposes that the name change of a main thorough fare of Sarnia, namely Indian Road, can be changed to directly honour the Indigenous population and engage the City of Sarnia inciting inclusive change.  In raising awareness of the structures of racism that persist where many remain completely unaware of such structures which maintain oppression and racialization of Indigenous people.  This petition would recommend the change in street name to Anishinaabe Way.
