A Call For Bette Nash's Resignation

The Issue

Bette Nash has been a highly-celebrated flight attendant for her 60+ years with American Airlines. However, many of us are calling for her resignation for the following reasons:

  • Her repeated track record of using inflammatory racist language towards and to describe Black flight attendants. Customers have noticed this as well and have written letters.
  • She was hired before the first Black person was even allowed to become a flight attendant in the industry (Ruth C. Taylor in 1958)  and the first Black flight attendant was allowed to work for the company (Joan Dorsey in 1964), yet she's celebrated for her longevity.
  • Her age and diminished cognitive/physical ability are a safety hazard to passengers and coworkers. We are not mascots, we are safety professionals first and foremost.
  • Her incompetence and racism has been overlooked by American Airlines at the detriment of everyone who works with her.
  • Her employment sends the wrong message about American Airlines' values- or lack thereof when it comes to being serious about racial inequity.

In times like these when corporations are at least *pretending* to center equity, Bette Nash is the living embodiment of inequity and a shameful past of employment discrimination based on race and gender. We are challenging American Airlines to end this embarrassment for us and retire her immediately.
