A Wake Up Call to: Save the Critically Endangered Dulungan Birds of Antique
The Issue
The Dulungan (Rufous-headed Hornbill) is one of the world’s critically endangered bird species, found only in Panay, Philippines—especially in Antique. Known for their bright orange heads and cooperative family behavior, they are symbols of unity and resilience in nature.
But today, Dulungan birds are on the edge of extinction:
Rampant logging and deforestation are destroying their nesting forests.
Poaching and nest-robbing continue, as chicks and eggs are stolen for trade.
Forest conversion into farmlands and roads has fragmented their habitat.
According to Philippines Wildlife Art, fewer than 1,000 to 2,500 Dulungan remain in the wild, and if current threats continue, Antique could lose its most iconic bird within our lifetime.
As Antiqueños, Filipinos, and global citizens, we cannot let this happen.
My Proposals:
Environment & Wildlife Protection
•Enforce strict laws against illegal logging and poaching in Antique.
•Designate Dulungan nesting forests as critical habitat zones.
•Establish Dulungan wildlife rescue, monitoring, and rehabilitation centers.
Community & Indigenous Partnership
•Support Indigenous Peoples and local communities who act as Dulungan guardians.
•Expand forest warden programs to monitor nesting sites.
Eco-Tourism & Education
•Develop sustainable eco-tourism that highlights Dulungan as Antique’s pride.
•Launch educational campaigns in schools and communities about the Dulungan’s role in forest regeneration.
Why This Matters
The Dulungan is not just a bird—it is a forest builder. By dispersing seeds, Dulungan hornbills keep Antique’s forests alive, ensuring clean water, fresh air, and protection against floods and landslides.
Losing them means losing our forests, our heritage, and our responsibility to future generations.
“If the forests disappear, so will the Dulungan and so will we.”
